Jeff Beck, Paul Rodgers and Ann Wilson will combine forces for the Stars Align tour, a 19 stop series of concerts that begins July 18th in West Valley City, Utah and wraps up in Tampa on August 26. The one time Yardbird, the Free and Bad Company front man and the co-founding sister of Heart will bring along the Deborah Bonham, sister of the late Led Zeppelin drummer, as the opener. Roger Daltrey has announced that the tour dates doing Tommy he has scheduled for the US this summer will all feature full orchestras. The series of dates opens June 8 at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts adjacent to the original Woodstock festival grounds with Daltrey backed by the Hundon Valley Philharmonic. The Who front man says, 'I'm really looking forward to singing Tommy, not only with my great backing group, but also with some of the finest orchestras in the country.'

Moving the Grammy awards show from Tinsel Town to New York City did little to reduce the levels of hype and nonsense that have made the show and the orgainzation irrelevant to the vast majority of Classic Rock artists and fans. With few exceptions, far more emphasis was put on smoke and mirrors and glitz and gimmicks than music. Little of the hardware related to Rock was handed out during the televised ceremony. If regaining some credibility with Rockers was a priority, you would never guess. Leonard Cohen was a remarkable songwriter, but posthumously awarding him the Best Rock Performance at the Grammys was the most ludicrous thing since Jethro Tull won the Best Heavy Metal award. Whatever.
Led Zeppelin's June, 1972 concerts at the LA Forum and the Long Beach Arena got distilled into the 2003 release titled How The West Was Won. On March 23, a triple CD re-release also offered in vinly a Blu-ray audio gets issueded. All tracks on the original release have been remastered, and the collection includes a number of songs recorded those nights not included on the 2003 release.
Bill Clinton cruised to his presidential victory on appearances using Fleetwood Mac's Don't Stop as his campaign theme. Friday (1/26) the former President was on hand to hand over the MusiCares honor, making them the first band to land the honor usually bestowed on an individual musician. Previous honorees for the recognition include Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney. It should have been a given that at least one notable Rock act would have been in the lineup of artists performing FM songs at the event. Nope. Keith Urban, Lorde, Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus and Juanes did them before Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, Christine McVie and John McVie tokk the stage to do Go Your Own Way and Little Lies.

Musicians are getting tired of seeing a sea of cell phones taking photos and shooting video of them during concerts. So are a lot of fans that end up with increasingly obstructed views. Some artists are taking action against phone use for photos, filming and texting during their concerts. Jack Black has taken it to a new level with his announcement that phones brought to his concerts must be secured in a Yondr pouch that won't be unlocked until the end of the performance. Fans needing to make a call or sned a text during the concert will only be able to do it within a designated zone within the venue.
We get the feeling that the negatives for this video has more to do with viewers voting against the idea of having to submit to this requirement than just the nerdy nature of the video itself. Are you for or against?
The Grateful Dead is the most prolific producer of concert performance recordings. The band's decision to allow fans to bring increasingly sophisticated recording equipment to shows got it started. The group later began selling complete concert recordings in the Dick's Picks series of releases. That continues to this day with the Dave's Picks series (why not Dave's Raves, we asK?). Less avid collectors among the band's legion of fans might be interested in The Best Of The Grateful Dead Live, a CD(2)/Vinyl(4)/Digital release due March 23. Here's what's in store on the set. Knowing Dead fans, spirited debates are already in progress over what songs are included and and whether they chose the right live version.

Robert Plant has repeatedly dashed prospects for ever again reuiniting with his surviving Led Zeppelin mates. He recently expanded that to say he can't imagine ever performing with Jimmy Page again in any configuration. He made that apparent during an interview with a Kentucky radio station. Hear it below. The LA Medical Examiner has attributed Tom Petty's death to an accidental overdose involving multiple drugs, most related to pain management.
There's already plenty of firepower in the solo band Joe Perry has assembled. Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, Terry Reid and David Johansn, Stone Temple Pilots veteran Robert DeLeo and Extreme and, briefly, Van Halen frontman Gary Cherone are regulars. Tuesday night (1/16) during the pre-release concert party the Aerosmith guitarist did for his Sweetzerland Manifesto album, the already formidable lineup was joined by Slash, Chris Robinson of Black Crowes fame and actor/musician Johnny Depp.
Perry brought the concert at the Roxy Theater in LA to a smashing end by destoying his guitar at the end of Train Kept A Rollin'.
Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench and Steve Ferrone will join forces for the first concert since Tom Petty's death when the three anchor the house band for an April 21 autism awareness fundraiser in LA. Light Up The Blues takes place at the Dolby Theater in LA and will include performances by Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Jack Black, Sheryl Crow, Judy Collins and several others. Light Up The Blues was first staged as a club concert in 2013 and was organized by Stills and his wife, Kristen. The couple has a son with autism and created the concerts as a way to assist families with fewer resources cope with their situations through Autism Speaks.

Songs and portions of songs on it came from other 1969 & 70 concerts, but much of this double album was captured on January 17, 1970 during the first of two concerts at the Felt Forum, the theater beneath Madison Square Garden's arena in New York City.
The widow of Glenn Frey has filed a wrongful death suit against the hospital her late husband was being treated at when he died in January of 2016. The claim contends that the Eagles guitarist was "...rendered sick, sore, lame and disabled" as a result of negligence on the part of the hospital and that he was in both pain and mental anguish in the period leading up to his death from what the group had stated were '...complications from acute ulcerative colitis, pneumonia and rheumatoid arthritis." The suit against Mount Sinai Hospital was filed just hours before the deadline under New York State's statuate of limitations for suits claiming wrongful death. Frey died on January 18, 2016.

Black Country Communion, the band comprised of Joe Bonamassa, Deep Purple veteran Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham and Drean Theater's Derek Sherinian, dropped this new video of Wanderlust, a song from the on-again-off-again group's fourth album.
Ann Wilson is working on an album of cover songs of lost Rockers she admired. The Heart member revealed the project on social media, posting, "It's a project very dear to me - a collection of songs by artists who have departed in the last several years: Leonard Choen, David Bowie, Tom Petty and Chris Cornell to name a few. It's thriling work and I can't wait for you to hear what we are doing!". No title or release date have been announced yet.

Billy Gibbons Up Close & Personal tour has been scuttled after it became apparent that fans attending the first few dates arrived expecting a lot more music than Gibbons was prepared to play. Their disappointment quickly escalated to increasing numbers of fans requesting refunds. A statement released by Gibbons or a representative attributes confusion about the nature of the appearances to misrepresentations in the marketing done for the tour, which the ZZ Top guitarist agreed to based on it being mostly a spoken presentation in which he would talk about his musical career and his passion for cars. Based on what we know about Billy, we can't believe he shares any responsibility for this unfortunate situation.

Paul Rodgers revisited his pre-Bad Company era during a tour last year. The May concert at Royal Albert Hall featuring the music of Free is getting released this spring. The 16 song compilation will be available in CD, DVD, Blu-ray and vinyl formats.
Eric Clapton says that he is going deaf due to persistent tinnitus, a affliction that often results from prolonged exposure to high volume sound. That and continuing pain related to peripheral neuropathy, an ailment that triggers sharp pain in the lower back and legs and nerve problems with his hands, has curtailed his touring. The legendary guitarits has just a few performances planned for 2018. Speaking with BBC Radio 2, Clapton said, 'A am hoping that people will come along and see me...' adding, 'I am a curiosity, I know that is part of it, because it's amazing to myself that I'm still here.'

John Mellencamp's daughter Teddi Jo has landed a role in Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. "Real" and Beverly Hills", now those are words you don't see adjacent to each other very often.
Michael Anthony used his Instagram account to tip Van Halen fans that a documentary about the group is in production. The former bass player for VH wrote "Filmed an interview today for a Van Halen documentary in the works. Brought up many great memories". Anthony exited the group in 2004 and teamed with fellow VH exile Sammy Hagar in Chickenfoot and The Red Rocker's most recent band, The Circle. Anthony has left the door open to touring with Van Halen. 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the band's debut album, but no tour plans have been revealed by the group.

David Robert Jones was born January 8, 1947 in South London. When he was 9 years old, his father brought a batch of popular American 45's into the home. Young Davy was especially impresssed with Little Richard and Elvis Presley. At 10 he began playing a ukulele and bass. Attending a tech high school, David concentrated on music and design and had Peter Frampton's father, Owen, as an instructor. Instrumentally, David formed his first band at 15 and then rapidly moved through the ranks of several others, along the way changing his name to David Bowie to avoid being confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees. His solo recording debut came in the April of 1976 with the release of the single The Laughing Gnome, which was followed by his self-titled debut album six weeks later.
Similarities between the KISS song I Was Made For Lovin' You (1979) and Bruce Springsteen's Outlaw Pete (2009) could have resulted in a suit, but Gene Simmons says they decided against going after The Boss because they like him. Speaking with The Guardian, Simmons said, 'KISS have sued lots of people and won. But some people we don't sue', adding, How do we decide who to sue and who not to? We like Springsteen. We don't sue.' Paul Stanley said some time ago that despite similarities, he attributes the similarity of the two to coincidence. His explanation at the time was '...there are a certain number of notes and they only get jumbled so many ways.'

Ray Thomas, the 76 year old flute player an founding member of the Moody Blues has died. The announcement of his passing comes three days after Thomas died at his home. While a cause of death was not provided, he had been diagnosed with an inoperable prostate cancer that forced him to retire from the seminal Prog Rock band three years ago. John Lodge took to his Twitter account to write, "Ray and I have been on a magical journey through life together since we were 14... two young kids from Birmingham whe reached for the stars... and we made it together. El Riot (the band he and Thomas were first in together was El Riot and the Rebels) you will always be by my side."
Angus is the last man standing in the AC/DC ranks and while he was always a riveting figure and character, many feel that the true soul and driving force of the band was his older brother.

The name might not trigger instant recognition in R&B & Classic Rock fans, but it did in a lot of artists they know and love. Rick Hall played an important and inspirational role in songs recorded by Aretha Franklin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and many other artists in multiple genres of music. His unique talent drew them all to Muscle Shoals, Alabama where he had assembled a group of studio musicians that came to be known as the Swampers. Duane Allman was lead guitarist on sessions before the other slots were filled by Barry Beckett (keyboards), David Hood (bass), Roger Hawkins (drums). They would split with Hall's FAME studio in 1969, moving to a rival studio started in nearby Sheffield, Alabama, but later settled their differences and reuited with Hall. Rick Hall died Tuesday at 85 in his home in Florence, Alabama.

Ace Frehley performed his song New York Groove and got interviewed by the NBC Sports broadcast team before the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres faced off in the annual NHL Winter Classic. The game took place at Citi Field in Queens on New Year's Day. Frehley's song is played after every Mets home win during the MLB season.
Speaking with Ultimate Guitar, Police drummer Stewart Copeland said he wan't very impressed by John Bonham because Robert Plant's singing was so off-putting that he did not fully appreciate what a 'monster' drummer Bonzo was until much later. In part, Copeland put it this way: "I was a Mitch (Mitchell, drummer with the Jimi Hendrix Experience) guy and a Ginger (Baker of Cream) guy and Bonham I didn't get. I didn't notice him because the singing put me off and I couldn't take Led Zeppelin seriously because of that singing."
Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule Rocked 2017 out and '18 in during a New Year's Eve set at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Set one focused on Mule originals, a cover of the '91 Allman Brothers Band song Kind Of Bird and then a combo of In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed and Les Brers In A Minor. Set two included a number of covers including Steely Dan's Daddy Don't Live in New York City No More, Something In The Air from Thunderclap Newman and then a series of revolution themed songs: Revolution from Dr. John and Bob Marley, Children Of The Revolution from T-Rex, Gil Scott Heron's The Revolution Will Not Be Televised and the Clash song Revolution Rock. After covering segments of Mountnain Jam and Melissa, the group got back into a political mode with Neil Young's Rockin' In The Free World, Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix and a covers of Fortunate Son and For What It's Worth.
