Speculation that Brian Johnson and Phil Rudd are working with Angus Young on a new AC/DC album spiked when Johnson reportedly ran into members of the band Terrorizer in a Florida airport Monday and they got him to admit that the rumors are true. A post on the group's Facebook page read, "We ran into Brian Johnson from ACDC at the airport today after the flight home and we asked him about the rumors of him being on the new ACDC album and he said "Yes" and that he is " Sick of denying it". So that was a cool surprise ending to the tour."
Rudd and Johnson had been sighted late last year with Angus and Steve Young at a Vancouver studio.

120 guitars owned by Pink Floyd's guitarist, including ones he recorded and performed many of his most indelible recorded and performed solos on, are going to auction to raise money for charity. Highlights of the June 20 auction held by Christies in New York City will be the 1969 black Fender Strat heard on Dark Side of the Moon, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Animals and The Wall. The guitar that produced Gilmour's searing solos on Money, Comfortably Numb is expected to sell for 100-150k. We'd anticipate it goes for considerably more. The 1955 Les Paul Gold Top he played on Another Brick In The Wall (Pt.2) is valued at 30-50k, and his 1954 white Fender Strat used on The Wall and frequently on stage will probably fetch $100,000 - $150,000.

A birthday today for a guy loved and scorned, depending largely on whether you preferred the early, boundary pushing art/prog period of Genesis or the chart climbing juggernaut the group became in the 80's. Phillip David Charles Collins was born on this day in 1951. He joined Genesis after seeing a classified ad for a drummer in a 1970 edition Melody Maker and auditioning for the gig at Peter Gabriel's parent's house. When Gabriel left the group at the end of the summer in 1975, Collins assumed the lead vocal role as they began recording 1976's Trick Of The Tail album. The end of 1977 saw Steve Hackett depart, leaving the remaining members free to steer in a the more pop direction that 1978's And Then There Were Three release heralded. The mass appeal pivot introduced them to a much broader audience but cost Genesis the bond they had with droves of early fans.

Happy birthday today to the only member of Pink Floyd on every one of the group's albums, drummer Nick Mason, born on this date in 1944 in London. In addition to his decade of keeping the beat for the band many consider the definitive Prog Rock group, Mason is an avid exotic car collector and frequent racer. He and Floyd guitarist David Gilmour have teamed to compete in some endurance races and were both injured in a crash during an off-road race in Mexico.
Other musicians of note born on January 27 include legendary slide guitarist Elmore James (1918-1963), who has been cited as having been a major influence by Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, George Thorogood, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Keith Richards and many more. Edward Lodewiijk Van Halen rocked into this world on this date in 1955. The founding Van Halen guitarist was born in Amsterdam and given the middle name that is the Dutch version of Ludwig by his parents in homage to composer Ludwig van Beethoven. His father was a multi instrumentalist and got his sons started on piano when Eddie was just 6. When Eddie was 12, the family relocated to Pasadena, California where he took up drumming, but hearing brother Alex bang out the drum part of Wipe Out by the Surfaris convinced Eddie he couldn't top him so he switched to guitar. The two formed a grade school band called The Broken Combs and he and Alex were hooked.

On 1/26/1986 Lynyrd Skynyrd's Allen Collins was paralyzed from the waist down and his girlfriend died in the crash of his new Thunderbird. On this day in 2014 Led Zeppelin finally earned its first Best Rock Album Grammy award for Celebration Day, the recording of the group's 2007 reunion concert. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr reunited for the Ed Sullivan Show anniversary special in 2014. And Lindsey Buckingham did his last concert as a member of Fleetwood Mac at the MusiCares Person of the Year awards presentation. The group would oust him in early April.

This Tweet from Eddie Van Halen should amp up anticipation of a 2019 VH tour. There's a lot floating around about this and who will or won't be included if it comes together. Diamond Dave got things started late last year with chatter that Van Halen would do an 'original thing' in the new year. Michael Anthony then denied having been approached, but with promoters chomping at the bit, odds could swing toward it happening even if it ends up being a handful of stadium dates. 
THE big questions are whether Sammy Hagar gets an invite to participate and whether he accepts if he does. The Red Rocker proposed a VH tour including both him and Roth a couple of years ago, but got nowhere convincing others of taking him up on the idea.

A father who was a mob bookie in Chicago and a Mormon mother might have contributed to Warren Zevon developing into such a fascinating combination of wildly irreverent and deeply poignant songwriting.  In his early teens, Zevon's family moved to California where Warren studied classical music, sometimes with the celebrated Igor Stravinsky. He bailed on high school after his parents divorced when he was 16 and headed east to tap into the New York City folk scene.  He had more success as a writer than a performer, writing a couple of songs for the Turtles and landing a track on the 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy's soundtrack.  His solo debut, Wanted Dead or Alive got released to little notice that year. He toured as keyboard player for the Everly Brothers.
In the mid '70's Warren relocated to southern California and things started to fall into place for him. He got tight with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham just as the couple was was getting into Fleetwood Mac and did some work with Jackson Browne.  Zevon would enlist those three and, partly through their connections, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Eagles Don Henley, Glenn Frey, David Lindley, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys to help him on his major label debut.  Browne, who produced the self-titled 1976 release, also signed on to co-produce the follow-up, 1978's Excitable Boy, with Waddy Wachtel.  The title track, Werewolves of London and Lawyers, Guns and Money all became big songs.
He would write plenty of great songs from that point forward, but none would come close to gaining the recognition those did.
In 2002, Zevon was diagnosed with a cancer associated with asbestos exposure.  Deciding he wanted to record a final album, he declined treatments that would possibly have prolonged his live but would have made recording one too difficult.  Long time musical friends Jackson Browne, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and Emmylou Harris helped him do it.  The Wind was released just under two weeks before Warren died in 2003.

Pink Floyd was out with its 10th studio album on this day in 1977 in the UK. Its US release would come on February 12th. With four songs, two of them multi-part and the pair that weren't 17 minutes and 10 minutes in length, the release was challenging to radio stations, but Floyd's stature made airplay certain.

On January 23, 1976 The Kinks released Schoolboys In Disgrace and David Bowie put out Station To Station and Elvis Costello's Trust hit record stores on this day in 1981, and John Mellencamp released Freedom today in 2007.

Rockers born on January 23 include Patrick Simmons of the Doobie Brothers (1950), the late Danny Federici of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band (1950-2008) and Cheap Trick's Robin Zander (1953).

Chicago guitarist Terry Kath accidentally shot himself and died on this day in 1978 while showing off with one of his guns in the home of one of the band's roadies. Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd died of pneumonia on January 23, 1990. Collins had been partially paralyzed in a car crash four years earlier that killed his girlfriend.

The Allman Brothers Band played Saturday Night Live on this night in 1982.

The guy Jon Bon Jovi tagged "The Voice" was born on this day in 1949 in Hanford, California. Stephen Ray Perry's father co-owned a radio station there and it's said the future front man of Journey was inspired to be a singer the instant he heard Sam Cooke's song Cupid on the radio. He was in a few bands starting in his early 20's, including Pieces, a group with Tim Bogert, bassist in the band Cactus and with the post Jeff beck Group Beck, Bogert & (Carmine) Appice. That was followed by time in a band known as Alien Project. A demo of one of that group's songs reached Journey manager Herbie Herbert, who was looking for a lead singer more suited to the direction he had in mind for the Bay Area band than Robert Fleishman, the lead singer at the time. Herbert kept his plan under the radar by adding Perry as a roadie and then having Steve do a song with the band during a sound check while Fleishman was out of the concert hall before a Long Beach show. Hearing Perry that night was like Perry hearing Sam Cooke to the other members of Journey. Fleishman was out, Perry was in and Journey was on its way to becoming one of the biggest bands in America.

Robert Weston Smith, the radio DJ known as Wolfman Jack, was born on this day in 1938. His raspy voice, howls and irreverent asides as he intro and outro songs on XERF, a 250,000 watt radio station in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico that blasted its signal across a large portion of the United States, made him a radio legend. He would later relocate to XERB, a 50,000 watt station in Southern California and then Minneapolis, but he continued recording shows for the Mexican station that operated at 5x the power output US stations were permitted to transmit at.
On January 21 in 1968, Jimi Hendrix cut what many consider the best cover song ever recorded, his version of Dylan's All Along The Watchtower. The session included Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones and Traffic's Dave Mason on guitar, and Jimi played bass as well as lead guitar on the track.
Soul man Jackie Wilson had a heart attack while performing in New Jersey on this day in 1984. He went into a coma and passed away eight years later.
Aerosmith's Joe Perry received the Les Paul Award today in 2017.

A pair of impressive albums had their debut on this day in 1975 and '78.  Blood On The Tracks, widely considered one of Bob Dylan's best, and the breakout album Infinity from Journey.  Dylan had started recording his 15th album in New York City in the fall.Unsatisfied with the sound of several of the songs, he delayed its release and went to a Minneapolis studio to re-record half the songs on it.  Journey's 1978 release on this date was the album that introduced Steve Perry.  The group's three previous releases had established a fair sized fan base.  Infinity, produced by Roy Thomas Baker, became one of the year's biggest albums in a year an amazing number of great lps came out.
Meet The Beatles got its US release on this day in 1964. The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia released his self-titled sol debut on this day in 1972, and Jimmy Buffett shipped out Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes on 1/20/1977 and Def Leppard unleashed Pyromania on this date in 1983.
Rockers born on January 20 include Eric Stewart of 10cc(1945)and Judas Priest's Ian Hill and Paul Stanley of KISS, both in 1952.
And January 20th in 1982, Ozzy Osbourne chomped the head off a bat on stage at the Iowa Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines and spent the evening in the Broadlawns Medical Center after getting rabies shots.

Janis Lyn Joplin was born on this day in Port Arthur, Texas in 1943. A combination of alcohol and heroin would cut her career and life short in October, 1970. Pearl, just her 4th album, would be released posthumously just before what would have been her 28th birthday in 1971. Though tragic, her early death was not all together shocking given her hard, fast lifestyle and frequent periods of heavy drug and alcohol abuse. 
The death of another Rocker born on January 19th (1949) did come as a shock. The always sharp dressed and clean cut singer Robert Palmer died after suffering a heart attack at 54 in a Paris hotel room in September, 2003.
Musicians lost on this day include pioneering Rocker Carl Perkins (1998) and the legendary Wilson Pickett (2006).
On 1/19/1993, a reunited Fleetwood Mac performed at Bill Clinton's inauguration. Aerosmith's Steven Tyler took a seat as a judge on this night in 2011 on the opening show of the 10th season of American Idol.

Recording sessions for Dark Side Of The Moon began on this day in 1973. The album would get its release on March 1. On February 18 of that year, the Rolling Stones did a benefit concert in LA to raise money to provide relief to Nicaraguans suffering from a devastating earthquake that struck near the country's capital on 12/23/1972. Bad Company formed on this day in 1974, Paul Rogers & Simon Kirk coming from Free, Mick Ralph from Mott The Hoople and Boz Burrell from King Crimson. Warren Zevon's Excitable Boy album dropped on this day in 1978, and Bryan Adams' Cuts Like A Knife in '83. The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder and Otis Redding were inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame on 1/18/1998. And Glenn Frey of the Eagles died on this day in 2016 from pneumonia and complications relating to other ailments.

January 16 has been an unlucky day for Paul McCartney. On This day in 1980, he was arrested at the Tokyo airport when customs inspectors found 8oz of marijuana. Four years later on 1/16, Paul and wife Linda were both placed under arrest in Barbados on drug charges.
Liverpool's Cavern Club, scene of many early Beatles club shows, opened on this date in 1957. Gregg Allman and Cher's marriage officially ended on this date in 1979. Mistaking it for a smuggler's airplane, Jamaican police fired on Jimmy Buffett's sea plane when Jimmy and Bono took off from Montego Bay on 1/16/1996, and the Rolling Stones played Madison Square Garden for the first time in 20 years on this night in 1998.

You may not recognize the name, but if you love Classic Rock you've certainly heard her sing. Clydie King, a backing vocalist featured on a slew of amazing songs, passed away on January 7th due to complications related to dialysis. 
Credited as 'Brown Sugar' on some recordings, King's superb voice is heard on albums by the Rolling Stones (Exile on Main Street), Humble Pie (Eat It), Steely Dan (Can't Buy A Thrill, The Royal Scam, Aja), Bob Dylan (Saved, Shot Of Love, infidels), Linda Ronstadt (Heart Like A Wheel, Don't Cry Now), Joe Walsh (The Smoker You Are, The Player You Get), Joe Cocker (Mad Dogs and Englishmen, Lynyrd Skynyrd (Pronounced 'Leh-nerd-Skin-erd), Elton John (Caribou), Ray Charles, BB King, and many others. She also released four solo albums.

Ronald Wayne Van Zant was born on this day in Jacksonville, Florida in 1948. He and other classmates formed the band that would become Lynyrd Skynyrd when Ronnie was 16. Van Zant and other long-term members Gary Rossington and Allen Collins eventually chose to name the group after a gym teacher who ragged on students with long hair, Leonard Skinner.
Another musician with Van in his birth name was born on 1/15 - Don Van Vliet. Better known as Captain Beefheart, he was a regular musical cohort of Frank Zappa. Martha Davis of the Motels was born on 1/15 in 1951.
The Rolling Stones appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on this night in 1967, an appearance that almost was cancelled until Mick Jagger agreed to change "night" to "time" when the band did Let's Spend The Night Together.
Scorpions released Love Drive on this date in 1979. Jimi Hendrix was inducted into the rock Hall of Fame by Neil Young on this day in 1992. Harry Nilsson died of a heart attack in 1994.

Who planning new album and symphony backed tour. Pete Townshend tells Rolling Stone that him agreeing to a 2019 Who tour hinged on the band recording a new album.Promising that the concerts will be "as fresh and powerful as ever", the guitarist also indirectly acknowledged he's aware that the overwhelming majority of fans will buy tickets to hear the classics, saying his ultimatum to agreeing to tour on that condition is, "...about my pride, my sense of self-worth and self-dignity as a writer."
Plans call fro almost 30 North American dates, a dozen in the east in the spring, the remainder in the mid and western cities in the fall. All dates are expected to feature the band backed by local symphony orchestras. The band has ruled out an appearance at a Woodstock reunion concert.

Expect an up-tic in Canadian/US border crossings closest to Cleveland on Saturday, January 19. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson will spend that day attending a series of events at the Rock hall Of Fame. At noon, Lee will discuss his bass collection with Lifeson on the main stage at the Hall and follow it with a book signing of copies of his book, Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book Of Bass. The 2013 induction or Rush into the Hall will also be screened during the day, and fans will get to examine an assortment of Geddy's favorite instruments up close. It ain't cheap to attend. Rock Hall members will get to participate for about $130. Non member admission runs around $150 - but copies of Lee's book, which is quite large and beautiful and retails for $75 are included and will be signed by the Rush member that day.

The include the Doors, Cream, Van Morrison and Sly & The Family Stone in 1992, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, the Allman Brothers Band, Janis Joplin and Frank Zappa in 1995 and Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles and Santana in 1998.

Clarence Clemons, The Big Man of the E Street Band, was born on this day in 1942 in what is now Chesapeake, Maryland. Were it not for being in a car accident the day before a scheduled tryout, Clemons might have ended up a lineman in the NFL. 
In September, 1971 legend has it, Clemons, was playing sax in a band named the Joyful Noyze at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, During a between sets break, Clarence walked to a nearby club where Bruce Springsteen was booked, introduced himself and proposed doing a song with Bruce and his band. They started with an early version of Spirit In The Night on stage at The Student Prince. By the time the song was done, each of them was convinced Clemons belonged in Bruce's band.
Keyboard player Tony Kaye, who had stints in Yes and Badfinger, was born 1/11/1946. On this day in 1985, the first Rock In Rio festival opened. Over its 10 days, AC/DC, Queen, Yes, Rod Stewart, George Benson and James Taylor would headline nights. Ted Nugent got arrested for shooting a flaming arrow during his 1993 concert in Cincinnati. And the Rolling Stones concert scheduled for Montreal was cancelled when an ice storm tore open the roof of Olympic Stadium on this day in 1998.

Roderick David Stewart was born on this day in 1945. Rod recently released his 30th solo album and while Classic Rock fans most appreciate him for then he was belting out great tunes on his early albums and while a member of the Faces and Jeff Beck Group, he still has one of the most distinctive voices of his generation.

James Patrick Page was born on this day in 1944 in west London. The future Led Zeppelin guitarist was inspired by recordings he heard out of Memphis,Chicago and other US cities steeped in R&B and Blues.
Another whose name is linked to guitar greatness was born on 1/9 was Les Paul (1919). Dave Matthew arrived on this date in 1967. Van Halen greeted the New Year with the album named for it - 1984, and
Rush released A Show Of Hands on 1/9/1989.

Original Woodstock organizer Michael Lang will go into direct competition with Live Nation's concert on the original site marking the 50th anniversary of the original festival. Lang told Rolling Stone Magazine that his event will also be on the Weekend on August 16,17 and 18, but will take place at Watkins Glen, the site near Ithaca New York that hosted a 1973 concert with The Band, The Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead that drew an even bigger crowd than the 1969 Woodstock did. 
We guessed Lang's lineup would be geared to like minded music tastes, while Live Nation would serve up a less homogeneous roster of artists, but Lang says the one he is heading will "...be an eclectic bill. It's be hip-hop and rock and some pop and some of the legacy bands from the original festival." 
It'll be interesting to see which lineup convinces the most people to show up, and whether those that do experience 3 days of peace, love and music or, price gouging, pilfering and chaos.

David Robert Jones was born on this day in 1947 in South London. Attending a broadly based technical school where he was able to study art, design and music, the future David Bowie was a student of Owen Frampton, an instructor whose son Peter also attended Bromley Technical High School. With Owen's encouragement, the two focused increasingly on music.

David formed his first band at 15. The short-lived Konrads got wedding and youth social gigs that required limiting their set list to familiar pop material David had little interest in. Brief stints in groups billed as the King Bees, the Mannish Boys and the Buzz followed, with none attaining much success.

Meanwhile, The Monkees had become enough of a sensation that Jones knew continuing his career under his own name would cause confusion with Davy Jones of that group. A knife designed for an American pioneering legend named Jim Bowie was also in vogue at the time, so David Jones opted to adopt Bowie as his last name.

He became involved in avant garde theater and dance pieces and developed a strong sense of the importance imagination and image could have in his development as a musical performer. Some of his songs were used in productions, but none translated into successful releases.

That all changed when he wrote, recorded and released the Song Space Oddity just days before the launch of Apollo 11, the space mission that landed Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong on the moon. The single rocketed to the top 5 on British singles chart and David Bowie was on his way.

Others born on January 8th include concert promoter and operator of the Fillmore East, Fillmore West and Winterland,Bill Graham (1931), Elvis Presley (1935) and Robbie Krieger of the Doors (1946). KISS signed their first record contract on this date in 1974. The following year, Led Zeppelin sold out four Madison Square Garden concerts in 4 hours. The New York City dates replaced ones planned for Boston after rioting broke out among people in cue for tickets. On this day in 1991, Def Leppard's Steve Clark died as a result of a combination of alcohol and pain medication. Nirvana's last US concert was at Center Arena in Seattle on 1/8/1994.

The older of the Youngs in AC/DC was born on this day in 1953 in Glasgow, Scotland. Other Rockers arriving on 1/6 included Pink Floyd's Crazy Diamond, Syd Barrett (1946) and Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds (1951). Gibson patented the Flying V guitar on this date in 1958. In 1975, fans waiting for tickets to a Led Zeppelin concert scheduled for Boston rioted. The group rescheduled the concert in New York City. And Bill Wyman announced he was leaving the Rolling Stones on this day in 1993.

Carlos Santana will release new music on January 25 in the form of an EP on the Concord Records label titled In Search of Mona Lisa. The guitar legend also has a full album in the works for this summer. The 10 time Grammy winner has also indicated he will welcome the chance to play at a festival marking the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. Santana played the original festival a couple of weeks before the group's debut album was released.

A couple of important debuts hit record stores on this day in 1973 - Aerosmith's self-titled debut and Brce Springsteen's Greetings From Asbury Park, New Jersey. Elvis Costello released his 3rd album, Armed Forces on 5/5/1979.
Sam Phillips, the pioneering producer behind Sun Studios and Sun Records in Memphis was born on this day in 1923. He produced material for Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and countless others. He was also largely responsible for Presley's rise to prominence and stood against segregation factions within the recording industry.
Prince made his live performing debut on this night in 1979 at The Capri Club in Minneapolis.

The debut album that immediately established the Doors as one of preeminent bands in America dropped on this day in 1967. Reviewing it for Crawdaddy, Paul Williams called the debut 'an album of "magnitude" and wrote, "The birth of the group is in this album, and it's as good as anything in rock."
On this day in 1986 we lost Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy to pneumonia and liver failure.
And on 1/4/2004, Ray Davies of the Kinks was shot and wounded in New Orleans while trying to chase down a thief that snatched his lady friend's purse.

Stephen Stills was born on this day in 1945 in Dallas, Texas.  The future founding member of the Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Manassas was born in a military family and spent much of his early life living on or around bases in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Panama, and Costa Rica, absorbing music that would influence multi-instrumental future.  
Beatles producer Sir George Martin (1926) and Led Zeppelin bass player John Paul Jones (1946 were also born on January 3.

Jimi Hendrix introduced his post Experience group to the world with pairs of New Year's Eve and New Year's Day concerts at the Fillmore East in 1969/70.  The Band Of Gypsys double live album released on March 25, 1970 featured songs culled from recordings of all four sets, but most were from the New Years Day concerts.  There were no set lists. Hendrix called out audibles to bass player Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles.
